Introduction

This Classic Italian Meatloaf is a hearty, flavorful dish made with a mix of ground beef, fresh herbs, and rich marinara sauce.
It’s topped with melted mozzarella for the ultimate comfort food experience. Perfect for family dinners or gatherings, it combines the best of Italian cuisine with a homestyle favorite.

Ingredients

Meatloaf:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup finely diced onion
  • 1/4 cup finely diced bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce

Topping:

  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Combine breadcrumbs and milk in a small bowl and let sit for a few minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, soaked breadcrumbs, Parmesan, onion, bell pepper, garlic, parsley, basil, oregano, thyme, salt, pepper, and eggs. Mix gently to combine without overmixing.
  3. Shape the mixture into a loaf and place in a greased baking dish. Pour 1/2 cup marinara sauce over the top.
  4. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven, spread the remaining marinara sauce over the top, and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
  6. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  7. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and serve warm.

Serving Suggestions

Serve slices of Italian Meatloaf with a side of garlic bread, roasted vegetables, or creamy mashed potatoes.
It’s also delicious served over pasta with extra marinara sauce.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
